What Is the Non-Earner Benefit?
Not everyone earns employment income that can be replaced after an accident. The Non-Earner Benefit is designed to provide financial support to certain people who may not qualify for Income Replacement or Caregiver Benefits but suffer injuries that prevent them from carrying on a normal life.
| Who It May Help | Benefit Amount | When & How Long |
|---|---|---|
| Students, retired individuals, unemployed individuals and others who may not qualify for Income Replacement or Caregiver Benefits. | $185 /week | Not payable for the first 4 weeks after the disability begins and payable for no more than 104 weeks following the accident. |
For policies issued on or after July 1, 2026, the Non-Earner Benefit is optional and the amount payable is subject to the limit shown in your policy.
Who May Qualify for the Non-Earner Benefit?
The Non-Earner Benefit may be available to students, retired individuals, unemployed individuals and others who may not qualify for Income Replacement or Caregiver Benefits, subject to eligibility requirements.
Example: A retired person is seriously injured in an automobile accident. Because they are no longer working, they do not qualify for Income Replacement Benefits. If their injuries leave them completely unable to carry on a normal life and they purchased Non-Earner coverage, they may qualify for the Non-Earner Benefit.
Should You Purchase Non-Earner Coverage?
If you do not have employment income that could be protected by Income Replacement Benefits, we recommend considering Non-Earner coverage.
Being a student, unemployed or otherwise without employment income does not mean an accident cannot have a serious financial impact on your life. If a serious injury prevents you from carrying on your normal activities, having this coverage can provide additional financial support during your recovery.
It is coverage we hope you never need, but it can be valuable protection for people who may otherwise have no income-replacement benefit available to them.
