Ontario Caregiver Benefit

The Caregiver Benefit can help with the additional cost of hiring someone to provide care when injuries from an automobile accident prevent you from continuing to care for your dependants.

As of July 1, 2026, the Caregiver Benefit is optional in Ontario.

What Is the Caregiver Benefit?

The Caregiver Benefit is designed to help when an eligible insured person who was the primary caregiver before an accident can no longer perform their caregiving responsibilities because of their injuries.

Who It May Help Benefit Amount Coverage
Parents and other primary caregivers responsible for a dependant. Up to $250/week for the first dependant + $50/week for each additional dependant. Generally payable for up to 104 weeks, with benefits potentially continuing beyond 104 weeks in certain circumstances. Coverage for all impairments is the standard option. Some insurers may also offer a catastrophic-impairment-only option.

For policies issued on or after July 1, 2026, the Caregiver Benefit is optional and the benefit amount and coverage selected are shown in your policy.

Example: A stay-at-home parent is injured in an automobile accident and can no longer provide the daily care their child requires. The Caregiver Benefit may help pay the additional cost of having someone else provide that care while the parent recover

Should You Purchase Caregiver Coverage?

If someone depends on you for their daily care, we recommend purchasing Caregiver coverage.

An accident can affect more than the person who is injured. If a child or another dependant relies on you every day, this coverage can help make sure their care continues while you recover.
